There it was..

Our first encounter with a creature of the fairy tale kind....what did we find in the ferns..

The Fawn..

There it was I saw what I shall never forget
And never retrieve.
Monstrous and beautiful to human eyes, hard to
believe,
He lay, yet there he lay,
Asleep on the moss, his head on his polished cleft
small ebony hoves,
The child of the doe, the dappled child of the deer.

Surely his mother had never said, "Lie here
Till I return," so spotty and plain to see
On the green moss lay he.
His eyes had opened; he considered me.

I would have given more than I care to say
To thrifty ears, might I have had him for my friend
One moment only of that forest day:

Might I have had the acceptance, not the love
Of those clear eyes;
Might I have been for him in the bough above
Or the root beneath his forest bed,
A part of the forest, seen without surprise.

Was it alarm, or was it the wind of my fear lest he
depart
That jerked him to his jointy knees,
And sent him crashing off, leaping and stumbling
On his new legs, between the stems of the white
trees?

Oh dearest, this is magic; I was just going to email you to tell you what I saw this morning in my own front garden....three squirrels playing in such a sweet way, one of them looking head on at me with a big apple in his mouth...it looks as if he senses it is the season to start gathering for apple pies....I saw a fawn and mummy once on my way to school. It was magic. The magic is only beginning...it NEVER ENDS....Anita

Dear Dutchess
This is a beautiful poem. I've always been enchanted by the thought of such encounters with nature -- in a time and place when creatures speak to us and we understand and speak back. Friendships never imagined with the wonders of the wood.
Your friend,
Rattus
PS, I love the picture of the white rabbit on your side bar. A handsome fellow indeed.

Dear Dutchess
I just love this poem, and the photo, those little eyes say it all. I believe that our little creatures speak with their eyes.. I often wonder what their thoughts are.. What oh what goes through their minds..
Thank you for sharing this.
Have a wonderful Sunday and bless you for your kind and most thoughtful words.
Blessings,
Penny
