Well, if so a century-old love letter discovered by archivists at Swansea University shows you couldn’t be more wrong.
The missive penned by William Weightman to his “dearest” Fanny was found in a temperance society minute book kept between 1879 and 1890.
And staff in the archives department were surprised to discover the letter is written in a code that shares many of the features of text messaging.
Weightman used drawings of eyes to represent “I” and a sketch of a fan followed by the letter E for “Fanny”.
The letter “W” followed by a picture of a hen is used to stand for “when” and “H” followed by “8” for “hate”.
In the letter Weightman declares his undying love and devotion to Fanny..
